Changes have taken place in the management of the Supervisory Council of JSC “Latvijas kuģniecība” (JSC Latvian Shipping Company – LASCO) with its previous member of the Supervisory Council Māris Gailis being elected to the position of the company’s Chairman. Uldis Pumpurs who until now fulfilled the obligations of Chairman of the Supervisory Council of LASCO has left the office, as he has decided to spend more time for his private business. He will continue working at LASCO as member of the Supervisory Council.

The changes in the management of Supervisory Council of LASCO will not affect the work of the Company – it will continue working according to the business development strategies of the administration structures of LASCO that have been previously adopted, approved and publicized.

The former Prime Minister of Latvia has considerable international experience, broad vision and long-term personal experience in the shipping area, which will certainly be a positive further contribution into efficient supervision of LASCO in the new position of M.Gailis.

M.Gailis was born in 1951. He has obtained higher engineering education in the Riga Polytechnical Institute (at present – the Riga Technical University). From 1990 until 1992 he held the office of General Director of Department of Foreign Economic Relations of the LR Council of Ministers. He also held the office of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1992, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1992 until 1993, Deputy Prime Minister and LR Minister of Government Reform from 1993 until 1994, Prime Minister of Latvia from 1994 until 1995, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environmental Protection and Regional Development from 1995 until 1996. He has been the Head of several official delegations of Latvia.

M.Gailis has worked in the Supervisory Councils of JSC Latvijas gāze, LatRosTrans Ltd, JSC Latvijas pasts. Until now he has been also the member of the Supervisory Council of JSC Ventspils nafta.

From 1996 until 2006 M.Gailis held the office of President of the Yachting Union of Latvia, from 1996 until 200 he was member of executive committee of the Latvian Olympic Committee, and from 2001 until 2003 he lead the expedition around the world on the yacht Milda.
