Information
Kazakhstan is located in the central part of Eurasia, south of the Urals. In the south-west it is washed by the Caspian Sea. The geographical position of Kazakhstan in the centre of Eurasia determines its considerable transport potential in the area of transit business. Construction of the Druzhba – Alashankou border railway pass between Kazakhstan and China and launching the Serakhs – Meshhed railway pass between Turkmenistan and Iran opened new transit corridors along the Silk Road route: from Chinese ports on the Pacific Lianyungang, Qingdao, Tianjin to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, towards the ports of the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. Today, cargo moves at full speed along this route. The present highway network allows going to Russia and former Soviet republics, as well as to China, Turkey and Iran, and provides a link with the ports of the Black Sea, Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. Shipping is carried on in the Caspian Sea (port Aktau) with exit to the Black and Baltic Seas via Russian river ways.

The infrastructure of the region and its business environment contribute to development of business activities of both local entrepreneurs and foreign investors. Oil and oil products account for most of Kazakh export (35%), other important groups of goods are non-ferrous (17%) and ferrous (16%) metals, ores (12%), part of its export being grain (9%). The key imported products are machinery and equipment, vehicles, various appliances and automated facilities, chemical products, mineral fuel, foodstuffs, ready-made and consumer goods. From year to year, the structure of Kazakh export and import changes towards diversification of business contacts. Trade with the traditional partners - the CIS and Baltic countries accounts for about 59% of export and up to 63% of import. At the same time, Russia continues to be its key trade partner. As far as countries outside the former Soviet Union are concerned, great success is achieved in developing trade contacts between Kazakhstan and Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy, China, USA, UK, South Korea, etc.
