On January 14, 2020 in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the National Health Service (NHS) AS Latvijas Jūras medicīnas centrs (LJMC) opened renovated and equipped 24-hour chronic patient care department at its Vecmilgravis Hospital.

Lelde Ģiga, Deputy Director of Medical Services of NHS, informed: “In response to the epidemiological situation, in order to enable the 5th level health care institutions to provide tertiary level services, LJMC is among those health care institutions that undertook to relieve the burden on higher level hospitals by accepting patients from those hospitals and providing further chronic care for patients from Riga metropolitan area”.

Chronic patient care department cares for patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases, oncological diseases, exacerbations or complications of respiratory diseases and other diseases when no further complicated treatment or surgery is required.

Jānis Birks, the chairman of the board of LJMC explained that all the new wards of the chronic patient care department are purposefully designed and equipped considering the specifics of care for a given patient population. The department has a total of 31 beds. 40,000 euros have been invested in the refurbishment of premises, procurement of equipment and provision of oxygen therapy.

Anna Aleksandrova, the head of the chronic patient care department explained: “The new department is a result of joint effort and proud achievement of the whole team. In a relatively short period of time, we have succeeded in the creation of department of such profile that will allow us to implement chronic patient care and treatment program. Beds of such a profile were urgently needed in Riga. It will allow to relieve the pressure on other hospitals by transferring patients for further therapy with us at AS Latvijas Jūras medicīnas centrs.”
