March 29, 2017 was the effective date of the amendments to the National Security Law of the Republic of Latvia whereby the JSC “Latvijas Gāze” as the distribution system operator qualifies as a commercial company critical to the national security.

Under the law, shareholders, share purchasers and indirect owners of holdings will have to seek permission of the Cabinet of Ministers for acquiring a holding, if the amount of holding reaches 10%, or seek permission of the Cabinet of Ministers for changing the beneficial owner, if holding reaches 25% (see the attached Reference material on the requirements of the National Security Law for more details).

Shareholders who owned their shares before the law took effect will not need such permission unless there are any developments (a qualifying holding or a decisive influence is acquired or the beneficial owners change).
